Marketing attribution shouldn't be this complicated, but here we are. Most brands I've worked with operate across dozens of channels, multiple devices, and sometimes even offline touchpoints. Everyone's chasing the same question: "Which marketing activities actually drive conversions and revenue?"

The problem? There are three main ways to answer that, and they give you fundamentally different answers. Pick the wrong one, and you'll waste money. Pick the right ones, and you can actually optimize your marketing spending without guessing.

I've seen companies throw hundreds of thousands at channels they thought were working, only to discover they'd been reading their data wrong the whole time. This happens because most teams pick one measurement approach without understanding what it actually measures, what it misses, and how it fits with the others.

What Is MTA (Multi-Touch Attribution)?

How MTA Works

Multi-Touch Attribution tries to solve a real problem: customers don't convert on their first touch with your brand, and they definitely don't convert on a single channel. Someone sees your Facebook ad, then searches you on Google, then clicks a retargeting ad, and finally converts on the email your automation sent. Which channel gets the credit?

MTA says: all of them, but not equally. It tracks individual customer interactions across channels and assigns credit based on a predefined model. The basic idea is smart—acknowledge the customer's actual journey instead of pretending the last click is the whole story.


Common MTA Models

Here's what you need to know about different attribution models:

Last-Click Attribution: Everything goes to the final touchpoint. It's simple. It's also usually wrong, because you're ignoring all the work that happened before someone was ready to buy.

First-Click Attribution: Credit goes to whoever introduced the customer. Good for understanding awareness campaigns, terrible for understanding why people actually converted.

Linear Attribution: Equal credit across the board. Sounds fair, but channels play totally different roles. Your awareness channel doesn't deserve the same credit as the one that closed the sale.

MTA actually shows you something valuable: the customer journey. You can see which channels tend to appear together, which sequences happen before conversions, and which channel combinations seem to work. That's useful information for spotting channel synergies.

If you run paid search, display, email, and social, MTA can show you patterns. Maybe people almost always see a display ad before converting through paid search. Maybe email almost never closes a sale unless it comes after an abandoned cart. These patterns matter.

For teams with solid tracking and multiple paid channels, MTA gives you something tactically useful: insights you can actually act on.

Limitations of MTA

The biggest problem is what we're all dealing with: third-party cookies are dying. MTA's entire foundation is cookied data, so when that goes away, so does the accuracy.

There's also the tracking infrastructure problem, which nobody talks about enough. MTA assumes you're tracking perfectly—cross-domain, app-to-web, every click, no data loss. I've never seen that actually happen. Most teams have blind spots from implementation gaps, and MTA just ignores them.

And if you're doing anything offline, forget it. MTA can't help you understand how your paid social advertising connects to your foot traffic or in-person sales.

What Is MMM (Marketing Mix Modeling)?

How MMM Works

Marketing Mix Modeling is a totally different animal. Instead of tracking individual customer journeys, it steps back and looks at aggregate patterns. You feed it historical data about spending across channels, and it tells you which channels actually drive business outcomes.

It uses regression analysis (or fancier machine learning techniques) to find relationships between what you spent on marketing and what you got back in revenue. But it also accounts for the stuff that's outside your control: seasonality, price changes, competitor activity, economy-wide shifts. That's the insight MTA will never give you.

How the Analysis Works

You need a couple years of historical data: how much you spent per channel per week (or day), traffic metrics, and your sales numbers. The statistical model finds which variables predict your revenue changes. The output tells you each channel's elasticity (how much revenue moves when you change spend) and what it actually contributed to incremental sales.

Strengths of MMM

MMM works with everything. TV, radio, billboards, influencers, owned channels—it doesn't care whether the data comes from a tracking pixel or a media buy report. That's why it's so useful when you're running campaigns that don't leave digital footprints.

You also get the macro view. MTA shows you micro-level patterns in customer journeys. MMM shows you the big picture: how your entire marketing mix performs, accounting for competition and market factors nobody else sees.

And it doesn't need cookies, which matters more every month as tracking gets worse.

Limitations of MMM

You need a couple years of history. New brands, new campaigns, new markets? MMM won't work yet. You have to wait, collect data, and then run the analysis.

It's also slow. This isn't real-time optimization. A full MMM analysis takes weeks or months. It's a strategic tool, not a tactical one.

Then there's the interpretation problem. Statistical modeling requires expertise most marketing teams don't have. Different statisticians can look at the same data and reach different conclusions. Your assumptions matter as much as your data.

What Is Incrementality (Lift Testing)?

How Incrementality Works

Incrementality testing answers the one question that actually matters: "Would this have happened anyway without my marketing?"

You split your audience into two groups: one that sees your marketing (treatment), one that doesn't (control). Then you compare their behavior. The difference is your incremental lift. It's the only methodology that actually proves causation rather than just assuming it.

You can run these tests a few different ways:

Randomized Controlled Experiments: Random assignment to treatment or control groups. This is the gold standard. The difference in outcomes is your true incremental lift.

You have to be willing to not market to some customers. That can feel uncomfortable if you're confident something works, but actually proving it usually saves you money later.

You need statistical significance, which requires volume. If you're testing on a small audience or a niche channel, you might need to run the test for months to get meaningful results. That's not practical for everything.

And scaling this is hard. You can't run incrementality tests on every campaign simultaneously. You have to prioritize.

Stop thinking of these as competing options. The teams actually winning at attribution use all three.

MTA shows you the pathway: which channels appear together in conversions and in what sequence. It reveals patterns you can act on quickly.

MMM shows you the financial impact: how your budget allocation actually moves the needle on revenue. It answers the "should we spend more or less on this channel?" question.

Incrementality proves what's real: it takes the correlations from MTA and MMM and tells you which ones are actually causal.

Here's a concrete example. Your MTA shows email performing well because it appears before lots of conversions. MMM suggests email is contributing 15% of revenue. But incrementality testing shows that 80% of the people who see emails would have converted anyway. Now you know the truth: email mostly reaches already-engaged customers and barely moves the needle on incremental conversions. That's worth knowing before you double down on email spend.

Building a Unified Measurement Stack

Most brands get this wrong by implementing one tool and hoping it answers all questions. Better approach: layer them strategically.

Foundation: Core Analytics and MTA

Start with MTA and selective incrementality testing. You probably don't have enough historical data for MMM yet, and that's okay.

Get basic attribution set up so you can see channel interactions. Plan quarterly lift tests on your biggest channels (usually paid search or email). Focus on the testing more than the modeling. As you grow, you'll naturally collect the data you need for MMM.

Mid-Market Brands ($500K - $5M Annual Marketing Spend)

You're at the sweet spot for all three. Run sophisticated attribution modeling, build a regular testing program across major channels (maybe 5-10% holdout tests), and plan your first MMM analysis once you've accumulated 12-18 months of good data.

This is where you start seeing the real power of combining approaches. Your MTA insights get validated by tests, and MMM starts showing you the big picture.

Enterprise Brands (> $5M Annual Marketing Spend)
